About me

I am a 41-year-old female living in Los Angeles, CA.

In 2004, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 34.

At the time I had full coverage health insurance through COBRA as I had recently become happily self-employed. I was fortunate in having this insurance (BC/BS of CA) during the entire course of diagnosis/treatment and follow-ups.

In 2006, I was abruptly dropped (my former employer had changed plans) and subsequently found myself unable to obtain insurance from any carrier anywhere in the US. I have been essentially "naked" since 2006, paying for what I can out of pocket and going to any free clinics that I can find. I went to a Remote Area Medical free clinic here in LA in May 2010 and even became a guinea pig for a pharmaceutical company in 2008/2009 just to get a modicum of care.

My greatest hope is that America will eventually have Universal Health Care for All. We are the only industrialized nation on Earth that does not care for the sickest and weakest among us. If you are sick and don't have the money and don't qualify for state or Federal programs, like myself, then you are shit out of luck.

Since losing my insurance I have been subjected to a lot of ill-treatment from health care professionals and just a tiny fraction have been sympathetic. The lack of compassion I have met on this journey is truly shocking. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I am in America sometimes.

This blog is my small way of trying to document my struggle and hopefully get the word out that the system, as it stands now, is only meant for the insured and wealthy among us.

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." - Dr. Martin Luther King

Well not much has happened, still patiently waiting for 2014 to get health insurance!   With the new law and the subsidies I will get "full coverage" insurance for around $156 per month, right about what I can afford.

Peace!

How does one get that kind of Romney money?

Damn, I'd love to have 100 million duckets to play with - I'd love an extra $25,000 to get my teeth fixed so I can leave my apartment without being embarrassed.

I probably should have gone the vulture capital route like Mittens did - but it's never too late.

2012 is the year for teeth and maybe a visit to the doctor - I've got no idea what's going on inside me but it doesn't feel good. An enlarged thyroid, an enlarged uterus, a painful lump in my breast amongst other things.

I can't imagine the utter greed of 1 person hoarding 100, 200, 300 million dollars - it's simply unbelievable. The good that could be done for others with just a fraction of that is mindblowing. How many mansions and yahts and Bentley's does one person really need? It's obscene.

At least Once Upon A Time, The Good Wife and Californication kicked ass tonight. Several hours of entertainment means several hours not worrying about money or health care.

It's 2012!

And I am still uninsured.

Dr. Oz had a free clinic here in LA but I just didn't feel like standing in line, outside for 12+ hours just to be told I need to go somewhere else. I appreciate their effort but ER's and clinics are not especially good for long term chronic care follow-ups.

Also my autoimmune disorder (Sjogren's Syndrome) has kicked up a few notches in the past few years and now my teeth are rotting. And my dentist just "fired" me. I suppose because they had already taken my entire savings account giving me substandard care I was no longer useful to them. They barely helped me anyway - I need full upper and lower implants or partial dentures at this point and I am only 41! Yikes! I am now sending out emails begging for pro bono care or a good payment plan - thus far? No luck.

Also, I am going back to my rough draft of my life story and doing some revising - now to find a publisher. If I have a reading and signing at Barnes & Noble in the future - would you come?

I can dream.

Thanks for reading out there if anyone is.

Great Salon.com article from Joan Walsh

What is this disconnect that Republicans have to the poor and strugglng? They seem to think that being poor and unable to get a job to support their families is automatically equated with being lazy and irresponsible. Republicans are elitists.
